We see it everyday - it's everywhere the media is - you know it - you hate it - it's all bad news. Well, I'd like to do my small part to help make a difference. I like reading good things but they aren't 'out there' enough so I'll bring you personal stories of good things. I hope you enjoy them! Please visit frequently to catch a little good news. If you have good news you would like to share on this site, please Contact HDP for more information and how to post your story. Please Help to Make a Difference! Please rescue an animal. You won't regret it. They love and love and love. That's what they want to do. They want to love and be loved and to be treated like the precious babies they are. Any shelter is a great place to start, but especially pay attention to 'kill' shelters. There is just no need for an innocent animal to die because it had irresponsible humans. If you own animals, and you are not a breeder or do not want baby critters, please have your pet spayed or neutered. The unwanted pet population is out of control and there are not enough foster or permanent homes for all. If you want to adopt a pet, and you meet the qualifications to do so, please do not hesitate. You will be so rewarded. It’s a wonderful investment of love. |

| Hog Day’s in Hillsborough always leave me with, at least, one memory. Albeit usually the hottest day of the year, or so it seems, walking from one vendor tent to another, making it nearly unbearable to visit every shopping stop, but one can usually tolerate the heat for a good dose of barbeque on a bun, a funnel cake, maybe roast corn and definitely the homemade, fresh squeezed lemonade. This year at Hog Day was a very different setup. And while I will not focus on the negative setup presented by this years’ chamber plans, one thing they did right was the entertainment of music lineups. My greatest reason for attending this year was to see Nantucket live… again. I’d seen them many years ago at a club called Diamond Jim’s located in New Bern, NC, at and near the hometown of the original band members. They played two shows that night: one for teens and one for adults. Now, how many rock ‘n roll bands would think of their young fans in such a great way as to give two shows in a single night? I was young then and it was going to be a great night, I just knew, and I was lucky to have my Free Will Baptist parents allow me to go to the show, but on a very strict curfew. But this time was like 1979 or 1980’ish (not trying to ‘date’ myself but those days were a bit fuzzy for me). LOL! Not remembering the order of the song list from Diamond Jim’s, and it did not matter as long as I thought I would hear all the songs I grew up listening to, I was pleased when the band opened the Hog Day show with “Born in a Honky Tonk”. The band had so much energy. I could not stay caught up with the flashbacks of my teen years because I was making new memories in present day. They rocked. It rained. Several folks left because of the rain. Band members invited die-hard fans to get under cover of the stage front or the sound tent. Saturn of Chapel Hill (in Durham) came to the rescue with plastic rain covers. Then came “This is for DJ;” they played “50 More” – one of the songs I listed on their MySpace site as being a big hit during the teen show recollection. The band had much fun, even during the occasional goof (did someone hurt themselves during a solo?!? Does the microphone still work that kept falling apart?) But the comedic part of the show that stood out most was the infamous T-shirt “Viagra Test Dummy” and the great country tune, “Halter Top Triple- D”. The rain shower was brief; the party kept going! The sun came out and it turned hot & muggy! But the party continued!!! I snuck a few pictures on my cell phone. I dialed Johnny Velcro and let him hear famous tune clips since he had a prior engagement and could not attend the concert. He would have totally enjoyed hearing and seeing some of his musician buddies again. Nantucket closed with “Long Way to the Top”, while some notable mentions of song included “Heartbreaker” which featured solo’s of musicians showing off their professional craft. The band played a cover for the women in the audience of Rod Stewart’s “Hot Legs”. The tearful moment included the tribute song “Is it Wrong to Rock & Roll?” (written at the time of Van Zandt’s death). Other songs performed included “Never Gonna Take Your Lies” and “What’s the Matter with Loving You?” As the minutes ran out for their allotted time on stage, fans pretty much had their purchases of CDs and other memorabilia by the aging young band. Autographs and conversations took place after the show – no one seemed like strangers to anyone. Members and fans reminisced about New Bern, Maysville, the NC beaches and rocking in Greenville, NC with Heart. I purchased a couple of their best CDs: “Nantucket” (self-titled) and “Long Way to the Top” and had it autographed at my request, “Can I get your signature, please?” Nearly all were willing to mingle and sign, except one. But he’s forgiven. ;) I’m sure there had to be a great reason unknown to the loyal fans that stayed to support the guys in the rain and other approaching storms. Looking back to the teen event, I think there is now a Wal-mart in the location of where Diamond Jim’s used to be. After the ‘teen show’, I was inspired to crochet a potholder and decorate it with my own logo creation of ‘Nantucket’. After this show, I was inspired to write a review. And I may trade in my Saturn, thanks to co-owner Randy! Yes, Nantucket has been around a long time, and I can’t see them not being around for many more years. I just hope I don’t have to wait another 30+ years to see them again. Thanks, y’all, for a great memory of this years’ HogFest!!! Hey! Maybe next year Nantucket will play and bring along Jesse Bolt and Mothers' Finest! Woo hoo! |
